Staff Appreciation Day a big hit

Awards, talent are highlights
OSU-CHS staff gathered under the big top for this year’s Staff Appreciation Day – Cowboy Circus. Lisa Riggs Jenkins, president of Staff Advisory Council, welcomed guests.  The festivities included a thank you to staff members, presentation of service pins and awards, drawings for prizes, and a Cowboy Idol talent contest. Akdar Shrine members added to the fun with a popcorn stand and Merry Maker clowns.  The dunk tank drew a crowd, and face-painting, a pop walk, a vendor fair and prizes rounded out the event.

Round of Applause

Dr. Dorothy Turetsky has been awarded a three-year $135,000 grant from the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology to study a novel splice variant of the AMPA-type glutamate receptor.  Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and is involved in numerous brain functions ranging from breathing to cognition. AMPA receptor over-activation contributes to the neuronal damage that occurs in epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.  The new splice variant effects AMPA receptors in an unexpected way, and might lead to innovative, neuroprotective therapeutics.

The Oklahoma Osteopathic Association (OOA) named Stanley E. Grogg, DO, associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Oklahoma Medical Education Consortium, as the 2006 Doctor of the Year. The award is given to osteopathic physicians who have shown exemplary leadership qualities in their profession. They demonstrate high moral characteristics and are highly respected among their colleagues and peers.

Dr. William S. Eddy, associate professor of family medicine, received the Celia and Ed Archer award from the Girl Scouts of Magic Empire Council. It is the highest award given by Magic Empire Council to non-Girl Scout groups, businesses or individuals who have contributed service to the Council.
