Books are Fun

OSU-CHS Staff Advisory Council “Books are Fun” Book Fair Tuesday and Wednesday benefits the SAC’s employee scholarship fund.  The fair features a selection of books and gift items at discounted prices, as well as a drawing for a free item. Checks and credit cards are accepted. For more information contact Reneé Williams at 561-1109.

 

Residency Fair offers GME information for current students

The OSU-CHS residency fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in Founders Hall showcases clerkships, internships and residencies programs.  Representatives from more than two dozen programs across the nation will provide information. The fair is presented by the OSU-CHS Office of Clinical Education. It is open to all OSU-CHS student doctors.

 

SNMA: Eugene Field Health Fair Saturday

The OSU-CHS Student National Medical Association health fair, “Growing in Good Health,” is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Eugene Field Elementary School.

Described as a celebration of the diversity of the whole family, the event is aimed at raising awareness and educating students, parents, and members of the surrounding community about health, hygiene, and community programs. OSU physicians and student doctors will offer health screenings such as eye and ear exams, blood pressure checks, hearing screening, cholesterol screening, glucose screening, and bone density testing.

OSU-CHS faculty, staff and students are donating boxes of cereal for children attending the health fair. The goal is 300 boxes.  Donations can be placed on tables located by the elevators on the ground floor, or near the student lounge on the first floor.

 

Join OSU Prevention Programs event to improve health in West Tulsa

OK Turning PointOSU Prevention Programs professionals and Westside Community Coalition leaders meet at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at OSU Center for Health Sciences CAME Auditorium, room D-007, to learn more about the Oklahoma Turning Point program and how it may benefit the Tulsa Westside area.
Oklahoma Turning Point is an Oklahoma Community Partners in Public Health Innovation aimed at strengthening public health infrastructure through community-based action. Larry Olmstead, director of the Oklahoma Turning Point initiative, will make a presentation about the program.
Cris Campbell, OSU prevention consultant, said OSU will support Turning Point by providing data and inviting participation from community and health leaders. He said there is a need for local residents to identify problems, get involved in making changes and become a more powerful voice locally and politically. “We need the presence, voice and leadership of the Westside community,” he said.

Support our Heart Walk team

OSU-CHS team members will be on the trail for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk Saturday, March 31, at LaFortune Park. The team roster includes Karen Senger, Crystal Leatherman and daughter, Shannon Spoor, Lu Piszek, Bill Childers, Kara Beair, Candy Yelle and Dr. Robin Dyer. Med-Xtravaganza: Our annual open house

Med-Xtravaganza begins at 9 a.m. Friday, April 6, in Founders Hall and hosts prospective students, parents, advisors, and undergraduate faculty who meet with current OSU Medicine students, faculty, and admissions staff.  Med-Xtravaganza provides information on all admissions criteria, a tour of OSU-CHS facilities, hands-on demonstrations of labs, and a chance to have one-on-one interactions with current medical students. 

“This is a great opportunity to see all that OSU Medicine has to offer,” said Amanda Gutierrez, recruitment coordinator.

The event presents information about applying to the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. A panel of OSU medical students will answer questions about curriculum and student life.

 

Osteopathic Scrub Run benefits LifeShare

Scrub Run
The Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Osteopathic Scrub Run Saturday, April 7, benefits Lifeshare Transplant Donor Services of Oklahoma. 

A 1-mile fun run begins at 7:45 a.m., the 5K at 8:15 a.m. and the 10K at 9:15 a.m.  All runs are ChampionChip timed and all are walker-friendly.

OSU Mini-Medical School returns on Thursdays in April

A free dose of health information is available to the public at the annual OSU Mini-Medical School. Sessions begin at 7 p.m. each Thursday in April in Merkel Auditorium, room D-007. Legislator-Physicians discuss medicine and politics

The OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine OSU-Political Action Committee hosted U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. and Doug Cox, M.D., District 5 state representative, for a discussion of "Medicine and Politics: The Importance of Being Involved.”  

The non-partisan discussion preceded the school’s participation in D.O. Day at the Capitol. It gave students an opportunity to hear from and to meet doctors who also are politicians. The OSU-PAC is selected by class officers and Student Senate. Its primary mission is to disseminate important political information and help organize the annual state D.O. Day at the Capitol and the national D.O. Day on the Hill.

Campus Research Day

Poster and oral presentations, awards and a distinguished guest speaker highlighted the OSU-CHS Research Day, celebrating “100 Years of Research and Beyond.”  Presenters included basic and clinical science faculty, medical students, graduate medical students, biomedical sciences and forensic sciences graduate students.

Student award recipients for the best oral presentations were Matt Hoffman, biomedical sciences division, for “Intrathecal Glutaminase inhibition with 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons,” Mentor: Dr. Ken Miller; and Monica McLaren, MS II, medical division, for  “Regulation of the flagellar length control kinase LF4 by phosphorylation,” Mentor: Dr. Nedra Wilson. Each student was awarded a $300 prize.

Guest speaker David E. Wright, Ph.D., gave the keynote lecture, “Ethics in Research.” Dr. Wright is professor of History of American Science and Technology, Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies, at Michigan State University and a consultant to the Office of Research Integrity/DHHS.
