AHEC externship slated
Four first-year osteopathic medicine students will take part in the Oklahoma Area Health Education Centers 12th annual Summer Rural Externship Program. AHEC matches the students with primary care physicians in rural Oklahoma to give students an early clinical experience, but more importantly to expose them to health care in rural Oklahoma. OKAHEC provides housing and a stipend to help defray costs.
“This year there will be several students in each quadrant of the state for at least three weeks,” Toni Hart, program coordinator, said. They will participate in a community activity that will contribute to better health for that community and an interdisciplinary experience with at least two other health care professionals who are not physicians.
Hart said past participants call the experience is a very positive one that introduced them to rural medicine in a personal and hands-on way, and reinforced their interest in rural practice. OSU-CHS and OKAHEC are working on plans to expand this opportunity to more students starting next year.
