OSU Pride Works! honored Shelley Houk and the physical plant employees in December. Houk is OSU’s Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act manager. Her nomination says Houk “exemplifies OSU Pride in every way, from her smile to her attire but, most of all, for her customer service. She is considerate of all: patients, students, staff and faculty.”

Physical plant employees were nominated for showing “real team work and service attitudes with a smile. Each and every time a work request is completed, they will follow up to see if anything further is needed or if the job was completed to satisfaction. The entire department should be applauded for going the extra mile.”

New club achieving goal

OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine’s International Medicine Club (IMC) is achieving its goal to give students a chance to study in other countries and to host foreign students here.

Two foreign medical students visited Tulsa for rotations during fall semester and more are expected says Brandon Green, MS-III, who helped start the OSU club in 2006. Green now serves as the local exchange officer coordinating the paper work and logistics of the exchanges with the help of McKaila Klugh, MS-II, OSU IMC president.  IMC is a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations, an independent federation of medical students’ associations throughout the world.

Medical student Julia Huang came to Tulsa from Taiwan through the IFMSA and OSU’s club. She studied at Morton Health Clinic with Dr. Michael Opong-Kusi and at OSU Medical Center with Dr. Joseph Knight and Dr. Jeff Hunt,.  She focused on infectious diseases and internal medicine, learning about conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis (she says less than one percent of the Taiwanese population has diabetes) and cystic fibrosis.

“It is valuable to experience something totally different,” Huang says about the medical center and the United States. “It is like a brand new world.”

Green says the IFMSA puts the whole world at a student’s fingertips. “The federation has approximately 100 countries with organizations and representatives. It makes it easier to go abroad to rotations and it gives us contacts all over the world.  We can participate in bilateral exchanges and we are able to send more of our students overseas than if we only did unilateral exchanges,” he says.

Green has been part of the exchange process. He recently completed an obstetrics elective in France. Another OSU student has gone abroad and a third is scheduled. Green says two more foreign students are expected in Tulsa early this year, and more in the fall.
