| When sky meets earth |
|
Jo Ann Threlkeld is a devoted gardener. Her husband, Dan, is a Tulsa television meteorologist. It’s a winning combination that Dan says works like this: “I watch the sky and she watches the earth.”
He says Jo Ann has a true gift for tending the earth. She grew up surrounded by crops and a big family garden on a farm near Weleetka, which is Dan’s hometown, too. While living in Oklahoma City, she enrolled in OSU extension classes, tended flower and vegetable gardens, was an active volunteer and raised a family. Over the years, she learned organic gardening methods and became an OSU master gardener.
“I was a volunteer counselor and wrote some testing for students, and also worked with a group that counseled gardeners,” she said. “I also volunteered in the office, did research and helped find answers to questions.” She began to learn about and use organic methods and products, fertilizing plants with fish emulsion and compost and mixing up a vegetable oil, dish soap and water concoction that thwarts most bugs.
After moving to Sand Springs, she joined OSU-CHS, where she is an executive assistant II in the fiscal affairs department. Back surgery curtailed her gardening last season but she can garden this year. Her large yard is wooded and heavily shaded, but she is undaunted, tucking plants into sunny patches to create an herb garden with parsley, sage, basil, mint, cilantro, dill, oregano and thyme. She often adds freshly-picked herbs to cooked dishes and salads and she doesn’t mind sharing with the deer that come around most days, especially during dry spells, for a bite to eat.
Dan pitches in on site renovations, drain installations and wrangling 50-lb bags of mulch. Besides that, he predicts a cold snap or rain better than most husbands. He talks about gardening and planting seasons in his on-air weather segments, and often asks Jo Ann for help to identify or spell the names of plants. “We make a good team!” he says. “People call the television station and ask me questions. I put them on hold, call her, get the answer and get back to them.”
So, when should spring pre-emergent be applied? “Wait until the forsythias bloom. That’s a good sign,” Jo Ann says.
And will it rain? Stay tuned.

Sherry Eastman, (photo) program specialist II for rural medical education at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, is the first recipient of the “Above and Beyond” award. She also is its inspiration.
The award was created by the medical school’s Class of 2009 especially in recognition of Eastman’s extraordinary effort for and service to students.
The Class of 2009 honor was given to Eastman for her incredible kindness and selfless giving, tireless effort in contacting preceptors, completing student rotation paperwork, reworking schedules and locating the best rotations on behalf of the medical students and without being asked or required to do so. The award was presented by class officers Chad Chamberlain, president and Anne Morgan, vice-president.
Eastman coordinates rotations for third- and fourth-year medical students with practicing osteopathic physicians in rural Oklahoma sites. The rotations are part of the OSU Center for Rural Health and OSU osteopathic medicine’s mission to train osteopathic physicians with emphasis on serving rural and under-served Oklahomans.
She has a deep commitment to OSU’s rural health mission and to its students. She recently established a rural health scholarship through the OSU Foundation. Eastman also has been honored by her peers as a recipient of the OSU Pride Works! award.
