Building plans update

Eric Polak, director of administrative affairs and chief financial officer, said that architectural design continues on a planned five story, 130,000 square foot building to be constructed at OSU-CHS in a joint project with the City of Tulsa.

The bottom two floors will be used by the Tulsa Police Department for its property room and the forensic crime lab. The remaining three floors will be OSU Forensics and Biomedical Science research labs. Construction is slated to begin in March 2009, continuing into late 2010. The building will be located at the southwest corner of the main campus building.

Society for Neuroscience chapter established

A Society for Neuroscience (SfN) chapter has been established in northeast Oklahoma. Ken Miller, Ph.D., OSU-CHS associate professor of anatomy and cell biology, and others established the chapter. Charter members are Miller, Craig Stevens, Ph.D., Doris Patneau, Ph.D., Kathleen Curtis, Ph.D., Tom Curtis, Ph.D., Greg Sawyer, Ph.D. and Ruben Schechter, M.D. Also charter members are Carey Pope, Ph.D., OSU-Stillwater, and Jamie Rhudy, Ph.D, University of Tulsa.

Miller said the number of neuroscience researchers in the area is great enough to have a national presence in the Society for Neuroscience. ”We hope this will allow us to sponsor students to the SfN meeting, bring in prestigious neuroscience speakers, and provide for community outreach in the Brain Awareness Campaign that elevates public awareness of brain and nervous system research.”

The society promotes networking among those working and studying in the field of neuroscience and of educating the general public on important neuroscience issues. It offers chapters funding programs designed to help them in their outreach and public education efforts, as well as provide opportunities for professional development. The Society for Neuroscience has more than 100 regional chapters in North America and an expanding number of international chapters. With activities ranging from lectures to networking events and information sharing, SfN chapters enable individual members to engage their colleagues on the local level. Chapters also serve as an important resource to their community by taking a leading role in the annual Brain Awareness Campaign.

Spring cleaning

It takes more than a duster and a little elbow grease to tidy up OSU biomedical science department research waste materials area. The department must conduct proper disposal through certified vendors and facilities. Laurie St. Clair, laboratory safety coordinator and radiation safety officer for OSU-CHS, and Steven Phillips, (photo) on-call assistant radiation safety officer, recently completed the project. Waste was gathered into several 55-gallon drums, as well as some packing bags and boxes. After accounting and paperwork was complete the waste went to specialty sites for final disposal. St. Clair said the entire process of organization, authorizations, and documentations of the project took approximately four months.
