2009 Commencement highlights

Regent Jay Helm receives prestigious DPS honor

OSU Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine conferred 83 degrees in osteopathic medicine in ceremonies Friday, May 15, at Spirit Bank Event Center in Tulsa. Also conferred were graduate degrees in business administration, biomedical sciences and forensic sciences.

Jay L. Helm, (photo center) of Tulsa, a member of the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents, the OSU Medical Center Trust and the OSU-Tulsa Board of Trustees, received the Distinguished Public Service Award in recognition of his ongoing and active support of the College’s residency programs.

OSU Regent Fred L. Boettcher announced Regents’ awards.  Kent Smith, Ph.D., assistant professor of anatomy, received the Distinguished Teaching award.

Stanley Grogg, D.O., professor of pediatrics, and medical director of clinical research received the Regents Distinguished Research Award for Clinical Science.

David Wallace, Ph.D., assistant dean for research and professor of pharmacology, received the Regents Distinguished Research for Biomedical Science.

Miranda Logan Phillips, D.O., received the 2009 Regents’ Distinguished Student Award. 

Osteopathic medicine Class of 2009 president Michael Chad Chamberlain, D.O., presented Class of 2009 remarks. Robin Dyer, D.O., interim chair and associate professor of osteopathic manipulative medicine and Edward F. Goljan, M.D., professor of pathology, were Grand Marshals and recipients of this year’s Outstanding Educator awards.

Willis organizes “Run to Breathe” event

Nicole Mayes Willis, D.O., (photo) organized the "Run to Breathe" 5 km road race and one-mile fun run in Owasso. Proceeds from the May 2 event benefited the Tulsa chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The run raised more than $2,500.

The run was dedicated to the memory of 12-year-old Haley Palmer of Owasso. Willis was among “Tulsa's 20 New Leaders" honored by the Cystic Fibrosis Sooner Chapter earlier this year. After graduating from the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in May, Willis began a residency program in pediatrics at OSU Medical Center in Tulsa.

Shontay Patterson, family medicine academic assistant, MS degree in Collegiate Scholarships and Services from NSU.

Co-authors
Harriet Shaw, D.O., and her husband, Michael Shaw, D.O., are co-authors of a chapter about rhino-sinusitis and a chapter about dizziness in the third edition of “Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine” textbook’s “Approach to Osteopathic Patient Management” section. They will make a presentation about these topics at the American Osteopathic Association national convention in November.
