Robert Allen, Ph.D., is assisting the U.S. Department of Justice International Criminal Investigative Technical Assistance Program in its efforts to enhance forensic DNA analysis in Colombia.
He will make four to five week-long trips there this year to consult with government forensic laboratories on how to enhance their efficiency in processing routine criminal cases, and to provide guidance on a rather large national program to identify remains from as many as 30,000 unidentified victims from drug related killings in rural areas in the country.
In Bogota recently he consulted with forensic scientists working in labs attached to the National Police, the prosecutor, and the Institute for Legal Medicine. A large, but rewarding, challenge associated with this visit was delivering a lecture on family relatedness testing entirely in Spanish. He will visit the cities of Cali and Medellin later this year.
